Routa is the Finnish word for ground frost - the layer of soil that freezes through in winter and does not release until spring. At forty below you cannot dig into it. A position has to be blasted out, so mostly there is no position, and the thing that would have stopped the shell is the thing you did not have time to make. You cannot bury anyone either. The forest closes the sightline at thirty or forty metres and takes the sound with it, and the war is being fought by very small numbers of people across a very large amount of it.

Built as a study in one idea: that winter is a condition of the ground, not a texture laid over it.
